Alright, after renunciation of my previous citizenship, and collecting the renunciation letter from Malaysia High Commission, I headed to Singapore ICA to register for Singapore Citizenship a few days later.
- Take new passport size photographs beforehand because they won’t accept the photographs you’ve submitted during application process.
- Reason being, photos must be taken within the past three months.
- Best to take it at a shop where they will ensure the photograph will be accepted by ICA.
- Scan your IC/Approval Letter at the entrance kiosk for a queue ticket.
- Wait for your turn near Room 19-25.
- Submit documents and photographs.
- Renunciation Letter (all A4 papers which you received from Malaysia High Comission with two photocopies of them.)
- Approval Letter from ICA
- Make payment of SGD80 via NETS.
- Wait for your queue number to be called again for oath taking.
- Once you are done with oath taking, you have basically completed the registration process.
- However, you are reminded to scan the Renunciation Approval Letter/Email (Borang K), which will be mailed to you from Malaysia, to ICA email. This step helps Singapore to ensure that your renunciation of previous citizenship is successful.
- You will then be permitted to apply for Singaporean passport one day later after oath-taking.
- Wait for letter/email to attend Citizenship Ceremony to collect your Singapore NRIC.
Done, you are ready to sing the Singapore national anthem now.

Hey, it’s me again. I hope you’re ok with me asking more questions. 😂😂
So, I’ve went to High Comm of Malaysia on Tuesday to apply for renunciation, and today I went to collect the acknowledgement slip, there’s a thin pink slip reminding me to bring along the original MY-RN1 form upon collection of the approval form K. There’s also a photocopy of my birth certificate that stamped with “Subject has Applied for Renunciation at the high commission of Malaysia in Singapore and pending approval from Putrajaya”. And there’s also a yellow coloured receipt.
Are these the required documents from ICA for citizenship registration? Or must I wait for the final approved form K?
If they require the final approve form K, how long did you have to wait for collection?
Thanks!

For the citizenship registration, you just have to bring all the documents you collected today. (Just in case you missed out some, so just bring ALL.)
—
You do not have to wait for the final approved form K.
—
The final approved form K will be mailed to you few months later (I don’t know exactly when). When you have received this, you’ll have to scan and email to ICA for record purpose.
You can refer to my second latest post for Registration of Singapore Citizenship @ICA for more details 🙂

Hi Pink, thank you for the wonderfully detailed posts. Have a few questions:
i. Will our birth certs be returned together with the final approved borang K (which I understand that it takes months to process)?
ii. Any impact to SG citizenship application since MHC takes months long to return the final approved borang K?
iii. At which stage one is considered SG citizen officially? stage 3 upon oath taking?
iv. Is it advisable to travel with Malaysia passport during stage 2 (sg exp tour, e-journey) as I have pre-scheduled biz trip. Should I postpone it till end of Stage 3?
Appreciate your advice on the above. Thanks!

Hi DC, replies as below:
i. Yes.
ii. No. MHC will provide another document to prove you have renounced Malaysian citizenship which you have to bring over to ICA.
iii. Yes, after oath taking. Do note that some departments may not have been notified about the change of your citizenship, e.g. polyclinics, you have to inform them when you visit these places. However, most departments would have their systems being updated.
iv. Yes. As long as you have not renounced your Malaysian citizenship, you can still travel with your Malaysian passport.

Hi DC,
I found this website pretty clear in its explanation.
https://www.singaporetranslators.com/blogs/can-i-use-malaysian-driving-licence-for-driving-in-singapore/
“If you have a Malaysian driving license and you have already settled in Singapore with your new Singapore citizenship, then you must convert your Malaysian driving license within 3 months of citizenship or getting a permanent resident certificate.”
Summary: either you covert anytime before you obtain Singapore citizenship, or within three months upon obtaining it.
Seems like you will need this as well: “For Malaysian licence holders, an extract from JPJ Malaysia showing information of your driving record and licence information (obtained not more than 6 months before date of conversion)”

I think thy hv a grace period of 6 months to convert after obtaining ur SG citizenship.. by right the correct procedure should be covert license before the start of ur renouncing

Hi Yin,
My Singapore Citizenship registration was 29 Nov 2019. Renunciation date 20 Nov 2019.
On 30 May, I received reminder email from ICA to submit renunciation document. I wrote to Consular to check the status of renunciation application. Email reply from Consular that Renunciation application will take 8-12 months. So I attached the email from Consular to ICA to ask for extension on 1 Jun. ICA replied that I shall upload the document to MYICA once is available.
On 20 Jul, I received letter from MHC (dated 17 Jul 2020) that my application of renunciation has been approved. However, I didn’t have pink IC & Singapore Citizenship Certificate at that time, there were a few email exchange after that. And the final email from Consular includes “For those who are still holding temporary Singapore NRIC, please contact ICA Singapore and request for a certified copy of your Singapore NRIC and citizenship certificate”. So I attached the email from Consular to ICA again to ask for certified copy.
And I finally got my pink IC & Singapore Citizenship Certificated this morning. 🙂
I should be going to MHC to collect my Form ‘K’ in next few days.
Hope this helps 😉

Hi Stefanie,
Thank you for sharing your experience and it’s really helpful. I’m currently in the same situation as to what you’ve described earlier. I received a letter from MHC(dated 14 August 2020) and I’d just emailed ICA citizenship to ask for a certified copy of Singapore Citizenship Certificate(less IC as I’ve my own 11B). Hope they would be replying soon.
However, I realise that you’ve collected the original documents as opposed to certified copies. Does it mean that you wouldn’t be attending any citizenship ceremony? The second question is, do they arrange an appointment for you or you did a “walk-in” to collect the above-mentioned documents upon notification? Quite a mouthful of questions but thanks in advance.
Lastly, with regard to the submission of Form “K”, I realise that as of now, ICA website has disabled the uploading button for those of us who registered for the citizenship at a later date. I guess we just have to email ICA our Form “K” upon collection in such case.
Warm regards,
Hao

Hi Hao,
Yes, I’ve requested for certified copy from ICA (attached MHC email to support the request), however, ICA gave me permission granted for Over-the-counter Services to collect my IC and Singapore Citizenship Certificate. And I’m not sure if I will be attending any Citizenship Ceremony in the future or not 😀
Answer to Q2: ICA gave me a specific timing to enter ICA for collection. But when I tried to scan for Q number at level 6, the system said I did not have any appointment 😀 and I had to choose no appointment services… However, I managed to collect my IC & Citizenship Certificate from enquiry counter.
As for Form ‘K’, I managed to upload through MyICA under “Apply/Sponsor for Singapore Citizenship”on 13 Aug. One of the readers (Low) commented on 17 &18 Aug that he emailed to ICA about Form ‘K’ submission, I guessed Low sent via email & ICA officer acknowledged Low’s submission.
All the best!

I don’t recall having a deadline set for the submission of final renunciation letter.
https://va.ecitizen.gov.sg/cfp/customerpages/ICA/explorefaq.aspx
Under Citizenship > Citizenship Registration, there’re some FAQs regarding this. However, there was no mention of deadline.
Question: Am I required to submit the final renunciation letter?
Answer: After you have acquired the final renunciation letter, you are required to submit a copy of the document to ICA. You may come down to ICA Building, Level and obtain a “Collection of documents” ticket and submit the following document to the officer. Alternatively, you may submit a clear scanned copy of the renunciation letter to our citizenship email address at ICA_Citizenship_Unit@ica.gov.sg.

Hi Louise,
I do not face the issues you mentioned as I do not have a bank account/property in Malaysia.
Bank account wise, my mother still has her bank account upon becoming a citizen. (really no idea how it works.)
Property wise, upon approval by ICA, you have to sell your properties in Malaysia or change the owner of the properties to someone you trust, before you can register for citizenship. (This is based on my father’s experience 10 years ago.)

Hello, I’ve finally made an appointment for my renunciation of Malaysia citizenship. I went to take the passport size photos today and found out that the dimensions for Singapore (35 mm x 45 mm) & Malaysia (35 mm x 50 mm) are different. Does it matter which one I bring for the forms?
LikeLike
As the photos for Malaysia side is just for submission of renunciation form, I would say the slight difference won’t matter.
As for Singapore’s side, as the photo is required for national identity card, if it’s me, I’d ensure dimensions for Singapore’s side to be accurate.
However, that’s just my 20 cents. If you’re afraid Malaysia High Commision won’t accept your photos, you can always take photos at the MHC during the day of renunciation.

You should have received a letter or an email that states the date and time for oath taking. Did you not?

Thank you for the reply.
However, besides from the letter of approval i did not receive any other letter/email from ICA. May i know did you receive the letter/email before or after you the renunciation at MHC? Also, do you think i can email in to book an appointment through ICA_Citizenship_Unit@ica.gov.sg?
Thank you again!!

The letter of approval should have stated the time for oath taking (aka registration of Singapore citizenship).
What does the letter of approval which you received state?
LikeLike
My letter of approval only stated to take the oath before the end of my birthday next year.

As we become Singapore citizens via different routes, our procedures will differ slightly.
For your case, you’ll have to book an appointment with ICA for oath-taking. You should only do this after you’ve successfully renounced your Malaysia citizenship at MHC.

MHC appointment is quite full now and I get scheduled to early next month. Due to this, I need to change my oath taking appointment with ICA. May I know whether I can change the oath taking appointment to the same day or the next day after MHC appointment? Will I have all the required documents immediately after MHC visit?

You’ll need three working days to collect documents from MHC after renunciation.

Hi Traciee, it’s possible but there’s a reader who updated us that collection was slow due to the bad weather. It would be safer to register at ICA on another day.

Hi Christine, may i check what will you be receiving from ICA on the day of oath taking? The certified true copy of temporary IC and Singapore citizenship certificate?

Hi,
Just to double confirm :
1. Do I get the Renunciation Letter that required by ICA (to be uploaded in the ICA Portal) 3 days after I renounce at MHC? As I need to re-schedule the oath-taking appointment.
2. Which is the Letter of Approval from ICA that MHC needed during the renunciation appointment day?
( Is it the one ask you to complete the Singapore Experiential Tour, CSS and e-Journey or the one that ask you to Renounce your Malaysian Citizenship and report to ICA for oath-taking?
3. When can I apply for Singapore Passport? After the oath-taking?
Thanks !

1. No. Renunciation letter is known as Form K which will only be ready about eight months after renunciation. You will collect MYRN-1 three days after renunciation and bring it to ICA for citizenship registration.
2. The letter that states that you’re at the final stage (which also states that you can renounce).
3. One day after oath taking.

Thank you so much for your reply !
Sorry to ask again. In MYICA portal now they require me to upload the Renunciation Letter. So I can just ignored it and just go for the oath-taking appointment accompany with the MYRN-1. Am I right to say so?
LikeLike
Yes.
When you say “they require me to upload the Renunciation Letter”, is there a deadline stated?
Also, do the documents required for registration of SC, include the Renunciation Letter?
LikeLike
There is no deadline for the upload of Renunciation Letter.
And yes, the documents required to bring along on the oath-taking appointment day includes “Renunciation Letter of foreign citizenship from the Authorities concerned”
So that is why I’m kind of confused

I see, don’t worry, ICA should know the final renunciation approval letter needs 8 months to process. The MYRN-1 will do for oath-taking.

Hi all, just a quick question for those done your ORAL (Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance and Loyalty). How fast do you see your updated status as “Citizen” when you login and check on “MyInfo” via SingPass? (My friend told me your IC number won’t change the old SPR NRIC is going to be your new NRIC as well, just color changed and status changed. So SingPass login should be the same as well)
Thanks!!!

Oh to give some context, I am asking because I am getting a HDB and I need to register my Intent to buy online, i supposed I am only able to do it after my status get reflected correctly online under “MyInfo” since we won’t be getting our hard copy pink IC anytime soon.

Since one can make passport online the next day after ORAL, guess your citizenship is changed the day after you’ve taken the oath.

Hello all, just to check, upon receiving the collection slip from ICA after oath taking, there’s nothing to do except to wait for further instructions from ICA on citizenship ceremony? And we basically have to live with the (flimsy) NRIC collection slip till further notice?
LikeLike
Yup! Think COVID-19 situation will get better and the citizenship ceremony will resume soon. Don’t worry, many of us have waited for a year (myself included) and have yet to attend the ceremony.
NRIC wise, it will usually be given during the ceremony which hopefully will happen soon. If you still did not attend the ceremony eight months later, which by the time you will need your Singapore NRIC for collection of Borang K from MHC, you can then write in to ICA.

Ah ok I see. Thank you! I will probably write in to ask for the certified true copy of the citizenship certificate first, workplace is asking for it.

Whoah, u’ve waited more than a year! Luckily I encounter this comment. I wanted to get the pink IC to apply for Citizen Top Up grant ($10k) at HDB, previously I have to pay extra $10k as I was only a PR when I purchased a BTO.

My friend who worked at HDB reminded me that the application must be done within 6mths after u took the oath, a lot of ppl overlooked n forfeited that $10k!
Thank u! I think i shall just upload the temp IC slip

At ICA websites,
Step 3: Upload Renunciation Certificate.
The step require to upload MY-RN1 and Birth Certificate which I received early right?
Not after 8 months [Form K]?
Thanks in advance.

For photographs, do provide 3 photographs for your NRIC registration.
There are professional photographers at the flats nearby (beside the TaiHwa Pork noodle area). They charge $6 for 4 photographs.
20 cents per photocopy piece.

Latest update on the registration of IC, I am done at this morning and been issued with a Temporary IC slip.
On the slip it self, it stated that pink IC collection on 2 weeks later, and date provided which is 30 Dec 2021.
Not sure this is the new practice or this practices already been there for long time. But foe sure, this is a good news for us as we no need to wait 6 to 8 months for the IC.
Thank you very much.

Hi Simon, did you also apply for new passport after oath taking? Was wondering when is your collection date for passport if you’ve applied
Also, how long after did MHC replied your email on appt to renunciate.
Reason why I’m asking is to see if I can make it in time to have all these settled before I go back to KL for CNY on 26th Jan. Otherwise, I might just start my process when I come back to Singapore in Feb since I have 6mths period to start registration (final approval letter dated mid Dec)

Hi
Thanks for all the useful posts regarding Singapore citizenship registration process. Our family as a unit got SG citizenship approved and asked to appear for registration together. Is the oath taking also takes palce as a unit together or it has to be done individually.

Hi, those of age (21 and above) can head to ICA together for the oath taking. Those below 21 will take the oath when they become of age.
