Ha! Gonna expose my previous citizenship. Browsed through the web but many blog posts were outdated, so here you go.

[UPDATES (as of 3 Aug 2022)]
From 1 July 2022 onwards, you may walk in for Consular services (except passport and visa matters) without prior appointment from Monday to Friday, 8am to 11am.
Applicants without Malaysian IC or any surrender letter from the High Commission during minor renunciation, kindly proceed to the National Registration Department (NRD) in Malaysia for the renunciation application.
– – – – –
(The best way to read the following instructions? Numbers represent steps to be taken in order while alphabets represent the number of documents needed.)
- When you receive the ICA Approval Letter which states that you are at the Final Stage, you may continue to read.
- Before heading to the Malaysia High Commission, please read this document carefully (find forms here: https://www.kln.gov.my/web/sgp_singapore/forms):

Documents to be submitted - a) Borang K (Yellow Form / Form K):

Borang K -

Form K (first page) [translated]
Form K (second page) [translated] - Nearly fainted when I saw the Malay words, so here is the translated version to save your time! Print it out, fill up once at home so that you can bring down and copy on the spot. They won’t accept your printed copy because they have their YELLOW version of the form.
- b) Form (MYRN1):
Print the first page will do, fill up once at home so that you can bring down and copy on the spot. The form that they gave me only had the first page. I guess they finally realise knowing so much about you is useless since you are no longer their citizen. They may update the form so your printed copy may once again not be accepted. - c) ICA Letter of Approval:
The one stating that you are at the FINAL stage.
Original + 2 photocopies (although they only took one of mine…) - d) Malaysian IC: Original + 2 photocopies
- e) Singapore IC: Original + 2 photocopies
- f) Birth Certificate: Original + 2 photocopies (If you were born in Singapore, please read “Documents to be submitted” carefully.)
- g) If you were born before 31 Aug 1957, will require your Malaysian Citizenship Certificate: Original + 2 photocopies
- h) Singapore Citizenship Certificate & Passport: Original + 2 photocopies (If you don’t have it’s perfectly fine because I didn’t too. Was so confused but I guess the order of application wasn’t the same for everyone.)
- i) Malaysian International Passport: Original
- j) THREE recent passport-size photos with white background: Would suggest just get this done at the ID photo booth located in the Malaysia High Commission. $8 for 4 photos. Well, this photograph will not appear in your IC or your passport, it’s alright even if you look terrible. [Photo-taking Service at MHC has temporarily ceased due to COVID-19 situation, please prepare your photos before heading to MHC for renunciation. (Updated as of 10 July 2020)]
- k) $10 cash for registration fee.
- Make your way to the Malaysia High Commission (Mon-Fri, 8.15am – 11.30am). It’s a long walk from even the nearest bus stop, might want to consider taking a grab ride over. If you want to save money, use Google Map. The nearest MRT station is Redhill. Take bus 32/64 over.
- At the guardhouse, use one of your cards with your NRIC/Name to exchange for a pass to enter.
- Go to Consular Section. There will be person sitting near the entrance where the whole world will ask him questions. Tell him you are renouncing your citizenship, he will pass you a fake Form K and Form MY-RN1. The fake Form K is to ensure that you have filled the blanks up correctly before they waste their precious YELLOW Form K on you. Remember to write everything in BLOCK LETTERS and with their BLACK PEN (actually it’s just a normal 0.7 black pen…maybe they are afraid you will use a 0.37 red pen so they provided plenty for you)
- After filling up whatever the person passed to you, show him/her and he will pass you two YELLOW Form K to fill up AGAIN.
- Once you are done filling up forms again, show the same person, he will ask for all your photocopies and clip them together. Next, he will ask you to take a queue ticket on your own.
- While waiting for your turn, you can pop over to the ID photo booth nearby to take your photo. Prepare your original Malaysia passport, IC and birth certificate too.
- When it is your turn, submit, stand, and they will ask you to wait for your number to be called again for payment.
- Make payment and they will give you a slip of paper asking you to return after 3 working days (date will be stamped) between 2.30pm to 4pm to collect your documents.
- Swee, get out, collect your card which you have swapped for the visitor pass and you are free to go. Just remember to return on the specified date to collect your documents (usually three working days later)!
When you return to MHC three working days later, you will receive MYRN-1 which will be needed for the registration of Singapore Citizenship at the ICA. Form K, which is the final approval letter, will only be ready for collection 8 months after renunciation. You may visit related posts (links below) for further information.

Hi Pinkolifant,
Thank you for sharing this post. It is very informative and up-to-date. I have done my renunciation recently and would like to add that for the collection of renunciation letter, please consider arriving early or a little bit later to avoid the long queue outside HMC around 2:30pm. This is due to the extra registration process required (temp. check and declaration) in view of the safety precautions. It seems that there is no separate queue line for those going to Consular and there is quite a lot of people coming to collect their passports as well. However, the queue is clear about half an hour later.

This morning I went there. Waited for about an Hour and half till it’s my turn. The rain was heavy and it lasted till about late afternoon. The queue got very long and everyone had to queue in the rain, outside along the HMC. And the time to wait there was slower due to the rain and people trying to cut the queue.

Just thought I will also share that if you are not born in Malaysia, do note that they will collect the original Borang W from you (instead of the birth certificate from the country you are born in) so it’s your Borang W that needs laminating (if it’s in a bad shape). Even though they will still need copies of your birth certificate but they will not collect the original. You will also fill in your Borang W number instead of Birth cert number on the yellow Borang K.

not sure about property but car my hub did not transfer ownership, heard from someone it’s not necessary to transfer car ownership. as for property i heard from one of my ex-colleague who got her citizenship a year back, they managed to retain their property in JB, reason being her aging parents unable to take the ownership of the property but cannot go without the hse coz the parents staying there, don’t know how they do it but they did not sell the hse in the end..

How about the car insurance and road tax because the document is registered under Malaysia. but now you holding Singapore Citizenship.) this is avoid any unforseen issued (touchwood). Transfer ownership and update the name on the coe is different process.

Email consular on 17Sept for renunciation , my appointment with ICA is 21Oct . Should I resend to MHC or waiting for reply?

Would suggest to give them a few more days. Most likely will have to write to ICA for extension as many readers replied that appointment with MHC is about one month from the email.

Hi, I resend just now and received reply 2 hours later, indeed the appointment date is one month from my 2nd email.

Did you manage to replace your mum Malaysia Citizenship Certificate? My dad was born before 1957 and he mentioned he doesn’t have one too, we need to complete his renunciation but is stuck with this supporting document.

Did you manage to do without the Malaysian Citizenship Certificate? Similar to PT, my mom was born before 1957 but doesn’t have the certificate.

Hi Yi,
I called ICA today and was advised that Malaysia Citizenship Certificate is only applicable for those who were not born in Malaysia. You can also write to consular@mhc.org.sg to enquire further.

Hi PT,
Thanks for the info. I have wrote to consular@mhc.org.sg and they were able to verify my mom’s Malaysian citizenship status after I have provided them to other documents of proof (identity card and passport). They responded that I can go ahead with the renunciation process.

Is anyone know Or experience that ICA allow For extension to taking oat if it takes more than 2 months from getting renunciation done.
Thank you.

You can forward MHC reply to ICA and ask for extension. It’s not a matter of whether ICA allows or not if there is really no choice of renouncing earlier. Most readers could extend.

Hi Pei,
May I know did you get the answer for your question no. 1? I have exactly the same question with you. MCH told me the appointment is 9am-10am. I’m not sure should I go early or not as I noticed there is always a long queue outside the MCH and they are mostly there to renew passport. I’m afraid the long queue will make me miss the appointment time hence I planning to go 1 hr early.
Thank you very much in advance if you can share your experience (if any) with me about this.

Submission/renunciation requires booking of appointment through their email address (stated in post). Do it quick, as slots are limited every, to meet your oath-taking deadline!

Hi PinkOlifant, thanks for the great post! May I ask the following:
1) I am waiting for Final Stage, can I get an appointment first? What kind of info we should furnish when ask for appt via the consular email?
2) I applied with my baby, but do I need to fill up 2 sets of forms? I read somewhere that anyone under age 16 actually do not need to renounce…so not sure if the same process that need to get an appt, then fill up form, attend in person for my baby.. Pls advise.
Thank you and others for your advice. Much appreciated.

Hi Yap,
1) You’re referring to getting an appointment to renounce at MHC right? If yes, quickly email MHC (email address in post), provide them with the appointment letter from ICA and they will revert with an appointment date. If date given is after your supposed oath-taking ceremony, you may write in to ICA to request for another date (but of course provide evidence that MHC gave you a later date).
2) From my relatives’ experience, they did not renounce for the children, technically they cannot before their kids were not of age. Therefore, DO NOT need to get appointment, fill up form and attend at all. (However, that was some years ago.)

Hi Author, thanks for such directive blog that really helps me through with the smooth renunciation at MHC. However I wishes to add one more tiny detail to make it more complete.
There is a long queue at Immigration section. Lesson learnt. Do not queue along with people who are renewing their passport. Turn Right”, there is a small consular section with shorter queue. Totally different entrance.

There may be high influx of emails such that they need more time to clear. Very likely that the appointment date they’ll give you is a few months later, be prepared to postpone ICA appointment.

Hi PinkOlifant, thank for your reply.
I just received the confirmation date from MHC, they planned me till 08 Jan 2021 for renunciation.
The question here is based on my final stage letter from ICA, i must complete this registration within 2 mths which is from 01 Nov 20 till 01 Jan 21. Meaning im late for my registration for my Citizenship.
Will ICA extend my date of registrstion or I should email MHC?
Im abit confused.

You can forward screenshot of MHC reply to request extension from ICA.
MHC can’t do anything to bring your appointment forward as hundreds of people are probably facing the same issue as you. Hence, postponement of ICA appointment is the only way forward.

Thank you PinkOlifant for this detailed blog. This helped a lot for my process.
I have just been to the High Commission of Malaysia to renounce my Citizenship recently.
Below are some details of my experience:
I emailed MHC on Oct and got a reply on the same day with appointment date which is a month later.
On the day of the appointment, I reached MHC around 8.30am (appointment time 9am) no queue at the guard house at that moment. I did all the SafeEntry registration, presented my appointment email and received queue number from the guard. No photo ID was collected from my side.
You will see snaking long queue for passport at Immigration section. Just walk pass that and go to the furthest right hand side. There were approximately 10 people queueing in front of the at the Consular Section when I arrived.
The rest of the process was basically what shared in the blog by PinkOlifant.
I paid and left MHC at around 10.30am. By that time, there was no queue at the consular section anymore. Collection of documents can be done any day after 3 working days, in the afternoon.
Hope this give you guys a brief expectation of the time needed to be spent in MHC for the process.
